Buspirone
Primer
Buspirone (Trade name: Buspar) is an psychotropic medication that stimulates 5-HT1A receptors used in the treatment of generalized anxiety disorder.
Mechanism of Action
- Serotonin 1A (5HT1A) partial agonist
Clinical Pearls

- Begins to take effect after 1–2 weeks. Does not interact with alcohol (vs barbiturates, benzodiazepines)
- Buspirone is not a very useful medication (close to being a placebo)
